What is a roofing square?
A roofing square is 100 square feet of roof surface. Contractors price material and labor by the square, so a 2,400 square foot roof is 24 squares.
Why is my roof larger than my house footprint?
A sloped roof covers more surface than the ground beneath it. An 8/12 pitch adds about 20 percent, and hips, valleys, and dormers add more on top of that.
